| Bio: | Nymphadora Siobhan Tonks![]() Place of Birth/Current Residence: Born in London, raised in Yorkshire, currently living in Hogsmeade on assignment Pets: A cat--an aloof Himalayan named Jinx, given to her the day she completed Auror training House: Hufflepuff Alum Year: Class of 1991 Family: Tonks is a half-blood, the only daughter of muggleborn Ted Tonks and pureblood Andromeda Black. Though she has plenty of pureblood family on her mother's side, she's never really met any of them with the exception of her late second-cousin, Sirius Black, and her younger cousin, Draco Malfoy. Her mum also has two sisters, Bellatrix Lestrange and Draco's mother, Narcissa Malfoy. Neither is exactly what Tonks would choose to look up to, and she's even been hexed by Bellatrix during the battle at the Department of Mysteries. Ted's family is much closer to Tonks, even though she's unable to tell the majority of them that she's a witch. Growing up surrounded by aunts, uncles, and cousins, she's just as comfortable in muggle London as she is on Diagon Alley. She can handle currency with ease and has no qualms about using electronic appliances, with the exception of driving--her closest cousin, Annelise, was in an auto accident, and Tonks has insisted on flying, flooing, or Apparating ever since. She's also incredibly spoiled by Ted's closest sister, Diana, and finds herself still visiting her house often. History: Tonks' family history is somewhat of a legend, the kind whispered behind hands at parties of the pureblood elite; the scandal in Cygnus and Druella's middle daughter running off with a muggleborn was so ghastly no one dared say it out loud. Andromeda was almost immediately blasted off of the family tree, and her marriage to Ted was a quiet ceremony with only their best friends and his immediate family in attendance. Despite distancing herself from her family, Andromeda was proud of her marriage and was quickly taken in by Ted's family, large but close-knit. It wasn't long at all into their marriage that Andromeda realised she was pregnant. Joking aside, the baby wasn't out of wedlock and the wedding wasn't 'shotgun', but barely ten months after their marriage, Ted and Andromeda's little girl was born. Young and still somewhat believing in fairy tales, Andromeda longed to give her daughter a lovely, whimsical name. Thus, Nymphadora she became. It was a huge name to burden such a tiny girl with, however, and Ted was the one who began calling her Dora. Neighbourhood children who discovered her full name, however, began calling her Nympho. Though at nine, she had no idea what it meant, she decided she hated the sniggers and coughs when it was said, and began demanding people call her by her surname only. Tonks was young when her morphing became obvious. At first, Ted and Andromeda assumed they were seeing things. Maybe her nose always had been slightly turned up. She was just a baby, all babies eyes changed colour. And since they noticed the changes at different times, they couldn't even confirm each other's stories. It wasn't until they were flipping through her baby pictures that they noticed it. Little Tonks' pictures were distinctly different from one page to the next. They looked at each other curiously, then back at their daughter. And sure enough, at the perfect moment, the toddler sneezed--and her hair turned bright red. Ted, as a muggleborn who'd never even heard of such a thing being possible, panicked. Andromeda, however, knew what metamorphmagi were, and after a trip to a Healer, Tonks' 'condition' was confirmed. It took her years to learn to look at it as an ability, or a gift. It was especially hard in school, before she learned to control the special power. She found herself in detention as often as not, simply for accidentally walking into class with green hair. By the time she hit Hogwarts, Tonks was already the spunky but clumsy bundle that she'd become as an adult. She was full of energy, excitement, and enthusiasm. Being sorted into Hufflepuff wasn't a huge shock for her. Her dad had been one, and her mum--well, certainly that stupid hat knew better than to put her in Slytherin, didn't it? Besides, Tonks rather liked the idea of being in a house known for being hard-working and loyal. Even if hard-working didn't always describe her. She enjoyed having a lie in and let her homework pile up on occasion. Smarter than she acted, Tonks found things were much more fun when she was socialising with her friends. It wasn't until careers counseling came around that Tonks knew she needed to buckle down. Being a hitwizard sounded fun, sure, but an Auror? There was prestige there. Prestige that young Tonks craved. Not only to counter her fool of a name, but quite possibly to gain a quiet respect not usually found in one so clumsy. There was also a part of her that desperately wanted to have, even if only in her own mind, a bit of satisfaction against the pureblood half of her family that rejected her and her mother. She knew in her heart that her aunts wouldn't care what became of her, but it was her own private smug moment. Her marks weren't superb, but she got into the Auror Academy, especially when they learned of her morphing abilities. As rare as metamorphmagi were, they immediately jumped at the opportunity to train one. She worked even harder in Auror training than she had at Hogwarts, and though her two left feet got her into a bit of a mess in Stealth and Tracking, she excelled brilliantly in Concealment and Disguise, and passed with an almost immediate position at the Ministry. It was the location of her first meeting with Kingsley Shacklebolt. The older, more experienced Auror often seemed frustrated with her and tired of dealing with the young woman's continuous mishaps. So nothing surprised her more than when he pulled her aside one day, saying he admired her dedication and her attitude, and could she maybe spare a few minutes after work, maybe over drinks? Fearing it was supposed to be a 'date' (as Tonks really couldn't see that happening!), Tonks followed him through London to Diagon Alley and on to the The Leaky Cauldron that day after work. Two firewhiskeys, three cigarettes, and a cold feeling in the depths of her stomach later, she knew her life would never be the same. A secret society against You Know Who, Sirius Black--her second cousin--innocent and living in London, and Dumbledore working defiantly right under the Ministry's nose. And Kingsley was inviting her along for the ride. Impossible? No, but definitely improbable. It was almost mind-boggling, but he said considering who her mother was, she might consider it, and would she be interested in speaking with Dumbledore personally? Recognising the risks Kingsley had taken by revealing the Order to her, Tonks agreed. It wasn't even a month later that she was in her first official Order meeting, and only a couple of weeks after that that she was arriving at the Dursleys' front door with the rest of the Advanced Guard. Tonks was expecting a lot of things from the Order. Assignments, secrecy, action, adventure. What she wasn't expecting was to fall in love. Remus Lupin didn't seem the slightest bit interested at first, and that was quite all right with her. He was everything she shouldn't have wanted, and vice versa quite frankly. Remus seemed the kind of man who needed to settle down with a mature woman, someone well-educated, well-spoken, and mild mannered. So when she caught him giving her the same look she'd been giving him, Tonks was more than a bit baffled. She found herself purposely planting it so that they were on assignments together. More than once she begged Sirius to ask him to stay--which, of course, Sirius saw right through. His little cousin couldn't care less if he had bonding time with his old schoolmate--she wanted time with the man for herself. He tried to warn her to be careful, but once Tonks fell, she fell hard. She knew he felt the same, she just knew it, and no matter how much he seemed to be trying to distance himself from her, she only tried harder. When she realised that being subtle was getting her nowhere, she finally took matters into her own hands. She came right out and asked him out--first for drinks, then for dinner. On the surface, it could easily be passed off as friendship. Molly, however, saw right through her, as did Sirius. Tonks didn't fight them on it--maybe they'd help plead her case. It didn't matter. Remus maintained that he was too old for her, too poor, and too dangerous. None of which mattered to Tonks, and she told him so. More than once. An Auror made a respectable living, she'd support them both. Age equaled wisdom and experience, and Sirius had taught her what to expect with each full moon, so that certainly didn't bother her either. And just as she felt she was starting to get through to him, he left on his assignment to attempt to infiltrate Fenrir Greyback's feral werewolf pack. Recovering from the curse from Bellatrix, sick with worry over Remus, hurt by his rejection, and caught up in the stress of the war that had hit close to home and taken Sirius away yet again, Tonks found herself sinking into a depression. She accepted the transfer to Hogsmeade to help patrol the city and the school as well. It was meant to give her something to distract her, but instead, only made it worse. Hogsmeade was quieter than the city, and gave her too much time to think. With a few exceptions, there wasn't even that much dark activity to work with. And she stayed awake with every full moon. Her world turned upside down once again the night of the battle at Hogwarts. Tonks was sure there wouldn't even be a problem. Dumbledore had only asked her, Bill, and--though her heart ached to see him there--Remus to help patrol as a precaution. He wouldn't be there, it was late, he just wanted to make sure everything went all right, right? But of course, Dumbledore was smarter than even she wanted to believe. They lost so much that night. Dumbledore was gone. Bill had been mauled by the person--thing, really--that Tonks feared the most, Neville had been injured, and Snape had become a murderer. Add to the night's tragedies the fact that she'd humiliated herself and revealed to a room full of people her feelings for Remus, and Tonks could sufficiently declare that the worst night of her life. Things began to put themselves back together slowly. Apparently, she'd finally issued a wake up call of sorts to Remus, and things began to slowly progress. He'd be going back to the school as the Defense Against the Dark Arts professor, she was coming to appreciate the quiet of Hogsmeade versus the mad pace of London, Bill and Fleur's wedding went off with hardly a hitch--things seemed to be coming together. But of course, things never seemed to go Tonks' way. All hell broke loose when Draco Malfoy was delivered to the school to be under Remus' watch for safe-keeping, followed shortly by Harry Potter, both boys looking near death. It was then that Tonks accepted that until the war ended, her life would be an up and down roller coaster. She also knew then that, no matter their differences, Remus needed her. It was also when she realised she had to fully stand and support the Order, truly becoming an adult once and for all--even if there are times she'd still rather kickback with a Weird Sisters special on the WWN and a large firewhiskey. During a battle with Death Eaters at the Ministry of Magic, Ted Tonks was killed, leaving Tonks without a father and Andromeda a widow. During the same battle, Tonks herself was injured, and she found herself undergoing thorough examinations. Much more thorough than most arm injuries would ordinarily require. And it wasn't much longer before she found out why. The Healer informed her, with no questioning in her tone, that she was pregnant. Terrified of Remus' reaction, she told him, and was stunned when he seemed even more pleased than she was. Mere months later, he proposed, and not only was she planning for the birth of their first child, but also for their marriage. All while attempting to help the Order--which wasn't going so well, considering neither Andromeda nor Remus wanted her participating much in her matronly condition. She even had to take time away from work in order to raise her family. Though her loyalties have often been tested, Tonks is still standing strong. Inside, she's still the awkwardly bumbling teenager who took more than one tumble down the enchanted staircases; externally, Tonks is a confidant, smart, and talented witch, ready to die for the cause and bring honour to her supposedly disgraced family's name. ![]() Description: For the majority of her life, Tonks could easily be described as vibrant, vivid, peppy, and even sassy. Though she wasn't exactly the bad girl, so to speak, Tonks certainly had a penchant for mischief. Responsibility was not her strong point, and she found herself sitting in Professor Sprout's office more times than she could count. Yes, she'd convinced the first years that bubotubers were good for their hair. Yes, she'd been the one throwing water balloons at Peeves' head. Yes, she'd gotten the whole House calling the Fat Friar the Pleasantly Plump Monk. But nothing she did ever really hurt anyone--with, perhaps, the exception of those ickle firsties. It was all in good fun. Which, in Tonks, translated to she simply wanted the others in her House to like her. Despite her bubbly exterior, Tonks was--and, for the most part, still is--very insecure. Her morphing abilities took a long time to learn to control, and they often left her feeling awkward. They also made being with boys difficult, because she was never quite sure if they liked her, or who she could look like or turn into. Though usually strong and independent, Tonks has just as much of a soft side as anyone. She's shy when it comes to her feelings, choosing to keep things as surface as possible. She doesn't like people prying into her personal life, and if it comes up, she'll turn it into a joke. The dark turns life has taken on her lately tend to leave her feeling drained and weak, a feeling she hates. She also despises feeling helpless, and has found that emotion creeping up more often than she'd like. She tries to keep her good humour in tact, but often finds it draining into sniping when she's hurt or alone. Due to her upbringing, Tonks doesn't trust easily. Her parents were shunned by several people, including Andromeda's own family. It's left Tonks with a more than slightly bitter taste where elite purebloods and especially Dark Supporters are concerned. It pains her to see Remus be so trusting with people such as Snape and Nott, and though she's trying to be supportive, she can't help but wonder when one of them's going to turn on them. Her biggest concern is the Order, making sure those involved stay loyal. She's also somewhat protective and nurturing, though rarely in obvious ways. She enjoys her guard duty, because it gives her an official capacity to show her need to protect others. The only one who sees her attentiveness firsthand is Remus, particularly just before and after a full moon. | |||||||||
